WHY VA?
On a personal note, my grandmother was a VA volunteer at 3 VAMCs over her lifetime and at one point had the second highest number of volunteer hours in the nation. As a young child I went with her to the Manchester (NH) VA and talked with patients, many of whom had lost limbs or had “shell shock”. Also, my father was a proud first generation American and an Army Veteran who served in the Korean War. When the opportunity to join VA research presented itself, I was excited to have the opportunity to make small contributions to improve Veterans’ care experience because I understood a little bit of the lasting effects of their service and the important role of VA health care.
